Tim visited Colyton Grammar School in Devon on 8 December 2014. Following the visit, English Teacher Helen Millman-Jones asked some of the students for their views on the sessions that Tim had run and wrote the following news item:

AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR WINS OVER AUDIENCE

As part of the English Department’s extra-curricular programme, the award-winning author, Tim Bowler, was invited to give a presentation to Year 9 students. Tim, who has written twenty books for teenagers including ‘River Boy’, which won the prestigious Carnegie Medal, talked to students in the library and read from his latest book, ‘Night Runner.’

Tim engaged the students with some anecdotes about his early life as a writer and his journey to getting published at the age of 40. He made it clear from the outset that he was interested in their questions about his books and writing and he quickly established a rapport with his audience, using a variety of entertaining strategies to get them involved.

The audience were treated to readings from two of his novels. These were presented to the students in a dramatic and engaging way, really drawing them into the tense and exciting world of his central characters. Students who wished to were able to speak to Tim at the end and purchase a signed copy of his latest book.

Some comments from the students who took part were:

‘It was very interesting to hear an experienced author discuss his writing career and recent novel. I’m sure that his talk will be beneficial to my writing.’ Jemima
‘I really liked it, especially when Tim read to us. I bought two of his books for my Kindle last night.’ Eric
‘I was very interested in his views and tips about writing, so I found the session very enjoyable and helpful.’ Tim
‘Tim’s talk was a good balance of philosophy, English and comedy. What a great guy!’ Henry
‘I found it very inspirational; he encouraged me to go out and write.’ James
‘Not only was it funny and enjoyable, but it was also very helpful to get first hand advice and knowledge.’ Thomas
‘Tim was really easy to talk to and he gave great advice. I found it a funny, relaxed session.’ Carly
